A multi-part project that spanned from April 2023 - June 2025; from interning with KVCR, to teaching fellow college students the art of radio storytelling, to creating an audio documentary that recounts and reflects on the impact of this journalism.
In Spring 2023, I participated in the UC Riverside Political Science Department Internship Program, a program that connected political science students to internship host sites; I was assigned to KVCR News, a National Public Radio (NPR) local station that broadcasts to the Inland Empire.
Since then, I have created radio features that spotlight local people, events, and topics of interest. Audio storytelling is an art of its own, and I have learned how to eloquently and concisely tell a story that resonates with listeners. Listen to my radio features on my KVCR Reporter Profile.

I have taken this experience further, teaching this craft to others with my R’Course “Local Public Radio Storytelling with 91.9 KVCR News,” taught in Winter 2025 and Spring 2025. I created this course myself, aided by R’Course Program Manager Dr. Jennifer Kavetsky, my faculty advisor Dr. John Medearis, and KVCR’s Program Director Rick Dulock.
In my class, utilizing the skills I teach them, students created radio features that will be aired on KVCR’s FM channel 91.9 and published on kvcrnews.org as part of the Student Stories series.

My time with KVCR and public radio, as an intern, a broadcaster, and a teacher, culminates in an audio documentary, the creative project for the UCR University Honors capstone.

Throughout the audio documentary, I recount the journey of the past two years and reflect on the meaningful work that has been accomplished. This story includes insights from nine individuals who helped bring this project to life.
Additionally, I presented this capstone project at the UC Riverside 2025 Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (UGRS) Symposium on April 22, 2025. The recording of the presentation is linked below.

On May 22, 2025, I was awarded the UCR University Honors Civic Engagement Scholarship for this project, in recognition of the impact of my civic service.

As part of my R'Course, I invited Program Director Rick Dulock to guest lecture about KVCR and the radio industry, and field questions from my students.
Also as part of my R'Course, I organized an optional field trip each quarter to the KVCR Station in San Bernadino. Program Director Rick Dulock and Morning Host Jessica Greenwell gave insightful tours on the operations and logistics of the station.
